The first view of the landscape when exiting the plane is both stunning and overwhelming. The active and almost 4000 m high volcano Mt. Erebus totally dominates the region. Ross island lies in the Ross sea, exactly at the border of the gigantic Ross ice-shelf. Three mighty volcanoes - Erebus, Terror, and Bird - have risen the island from the sea.
