Ross island is home to two Antarctic bases: the New Zealand Scott base and, as visible on this picture, the United States McMurdo station. McMurdo is the base camp for many expeditions, like it is for the TAMSEIS expedition. The hill in the right part of the picture is called Observation Hill, which used to serve as a lookout at the starting point of the long march to the South Pole.
