Helicopter flights to the seismic stations usually take one to three hours. The two scientists get their gear off the aircraft and set up the station, while the helicopter flies back to McMurdo (one hour of helicopter time costs several thousand dollars). After several hours time, when the seismometer station is set up, the helicopter returns and brings the scientists back to McMurdo base. During their time alone on the ice, the two men are on their own - in the case of bad weather coming up they can survive for two weeks with their emergency packs.
