At 2 a.m. our helicopter is approaching the northernmost seismic station of our expedition. In the case of a serious weather change at McMurdo in the south we would have to fly to the closer Italian base "Terra Nova Bay", which is famous amongst Antarctic explorers for its excellent food and wine. Unfortunately, on this day, no bad weather came up at McMurdo.
The yellow drum contains an earthquake motion sensor, which is so sensitive that it can record even small earthquakes on the other side of the planet! In the case of large earthquakes, the whole sphere of the earth wobbles and rings like a bell - this "echo" can often be detected for days after the earthquake - also here in Antarctica.
