A counterweight to the restless 24/7 shift operation and the ever present functionality of McMurdo base is the southernmost church of the world. The "Chapel of the Snows" was originally built in 1965 by the Navy priest John C. Condit from surplus building material, and was rebuilt on 1978 after a fire.
