The Antarctic continent - picture 54 of 60

The loneliest place on earth.

Around here, there is just ice. No life exists in this place apart from a few bacteria. When the plane drops the two scientists off at their seismic station, they are the only life form within a radius of nearly 1000 kilometres. Not even the astronauts in the international space station are so far away from the next living being. It is the certainness of being completely alone combined with the bizarre simplicity and purity of the landscape that gives this place a mystical atmosphere.
