The Antarctic continent - picture 58 of 60

The LC130 Hercules planes with their 80 to 100 tonnes of weight are so heavy that they indent the two metre thick sea ice within a day. Thus they have to be moved every day to avoid flooding of the dent in the case of a crack in the ice.

This aircraft is ready for take off, bringing a group of scientists back to New Zealand after several months of research in Antarctica. The flight takes 8 hours from McMurdo to Christchurch, where the men and women will join civilisation again, surely appreciating the feeling of summer raindrops on their skin, or the scent of a green forest.
