During the undocking of Polarstern, the mountain chain of the Antarctic Peninsula
gleams once again in the rays of the setting sun. For the next 9 months,
the remaining 25 overwinterers
are totally isolated from the outside world, save only a satellite radio connection.
During this time, the bay around the stations freezes up completely and the runway gets covered
with snow, so no ship or aeroplane can reach the station until the next spring.
