Antarctica - picture 14

Several flights a day are made with the two helicopters on board the Polarstern. Usually, they are very shallow flights over ice or water, with a magnetic probe hanging under the helicopter (not visible on this picture). Their purpose is to measure magnetic anomalies above the ocean floor. Those anomalies follow a very special pattern almost everywhere in the world an give clues about the age of the underlying seafloor.
