At temperatures of around -20°C, the spray in the air freezes immediately on the metal parts of the front deck and forms bizarre ice sculptures. In the background, newly formed "pancake ice" is visible, the first stage of freezing sea water. The pancake-like shape comes from the friction of the not entirely frozen rafts, so their margins get thickened up.
