On the way north, the Polarstern comes more and more in the area of the turbulent Polar Front,
a zone of extremely unpredictable weather and gale like storms. Once again, the spray freezes
on the metal parts of the ship. Although the further north we get, the less ice we see and the
hours of daylight dwindle rapidly.
The winter already begins in the south and the polar night approaches. And we get rewarded by
the spectacular polar lights. Lighting up the firmament with glowing colours of red, green and
white, they spread in gigantic rays across the southern night sky. Yet they disappear as fast as
they appeared.
