Source unknown, picture taken by a participant of the Shackleton expedition
Even though science in Antarctica today is still confronted with many difficulties, it is
important not to forget the times when polar research was a far more dangerous and
inconvenient challenge than it is today.
This picture was taken by a member of the legendary Shakleton expedition,
which got shipwrecked and lost in the Ross Sea in 1914. Only with incredible
luck and after endless torments, the expedition managed to survive and finally to get rescued after almost two years.
