Mt. Etna belongs to a category of volcanoes - andesite volcanoes - that are usually forming at the boundary of tectonic plates. And Mt. Etna indeed stands right on top of such a margin: The very complex boundary line between the Eurasian and the African plate.
With an altitude of 3326 metres is Mt. Etna the largest active volcano in Europe.
