While the surface of the lava cools down relatively quick, it is still hot and liquid only centimetres below the surface. When the pressure gets too strong, the flanks of the flow break open and the lava pours out. That way, the flow can divide into branches or change its direction within minutes.
The lights of Catania are visible in the background.
