Mt. Etna, Sicily, July 2001 - picture 6

Self-portrait during volcanologic observations in front of a lava flow. The flow is rolling downhill in a distance of about 50 metres with a speed of several km/h (at some parts a lot faster than walking speed).
The crust of the three-day-old lava flow whose black silhouette is visible in the foreground can be walked on for a short time before the radiating heat gets too strong.
